CLEP Benefits for Everyone
The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) helps you receive college credit for what you already know, for a fraction of the cost of a college course.
- The CLEP exam identification requirement is a “valid, physical government-issued ID that includes an English name, photograph, and signature.”
- Passports, driver’s licenses with an English name, and Alien Registration Cards (ARC) are accepted, and they must be valid (not expired).
- In the case of Korean Resident Registration Cards and driver’s licenses in Korean, entry will be denied as they do not include an English name. Therefore, please make sure to bring an acceptable form of identification.
- In addition, you must bring an ID with the same name as listed on your College Board account (the name shown on the CLEP Registration Ticket: https://clepportal.collegeboard.org/clepcand/home/dashboard.action)

CLEP
The CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) is an exam administered by the College Board that evaluates academic achievement at the level of the first and second years of college. Test takers of various age groups can demonstrate college-level academic ability and earn college credit in advance through CLEP, allowing them to progress to higher-level coursework while saving time and tuition costs. In particular, it provides an opportunity to demonstrate strengths in language and mathematics subjects.
CLEP began in 1967 with 10 subjects and has since expanded to 34 subjects. Students aged 18 to 22, high school graduates, and adults planning to enter college take the CLEP exam, and those who pass CLEP tend to have higher degree completion rates. Currently, CLEP is used as a credit recognition system at more than 2,900 colleges and educational institutions worldwide.
-
Test Structure
- CLEP is administered as a computer-based test (CBT) and is offered year-round at more than 2,000 official CLEP test centers worldwide.
- The test duration varies by subject, but it is generally about 90–120 minutes.
- Most internet-based CLEP exams are approximately 90 minutes, while the College Composition exam is approximately 120 minutes.
- Each exam is continuously updated through pretest questions.
- Pretest questions are not scored and are used to improve the format and variety of questions on each exam.
