Enhanced TOEFL iBT® Test

TOEFL iBT® Test Duration Reduction Effective July 26, 2023

Beginning July 26, 2023, the total testing time for the TOEFL iBT® test will be reduced to approximately 2 hours.
This update is designed to reduce test fatigue and improve the overall testing experience for examinees.

The revised TOEFL iBT® test will include the following changes:

  • Shortened Reading Section: Two reading passages with 10 questions per passage

  • Updated Writing Section: The Independent Writing task will be removed and replaced with a new task titled Writing for an Academic Discussion

  • Removal of Unscored (Dummy) Questions

In addition, improvements to the account creation and test registration process will make registration more convenient. New payment options will also be introduced in selected regions.

For more detailed information, please visit the official ETS website.
Updated TOEFL iBT® preparation materials are also available through the ETS website.

Starting July 26, 2023, the TOEFL iBT® test structure will be updated. Among the four test sections, one Reading component will be removed, and a new Writing task* will be introduced.
Please refer to the official video resources to review the updated test structure, including passage formats and the number of questions in each section.

*This change applies only to TOEFL iBT® tests administered on or after July 26, 2023.
It does not apply to the TOEFL iBT® Paper Edition.

New Writing Task

Only one question type in the TOEFL iBT® test has been modified.
The new task, Writing for an Academic Discussion, will replace the Independent Writing task.
In this task, test takers will be required to present and support their opinions on a given topic within an online academic discussion format.

The scoring rubric for the new Writing task has been published on the ETS website. Test takers are encouraged to review the scoring criteria carefully as part of their test preparation.
