Updates to the TOEFL iBT® Test Starting January 2026

Beginning in January 2026, the structure and scoring system of the TOEFL iBT® test will be updated.
The major changes are outlined below.

Introduction of a Multistage Adaptive Format for Reading and Listening Sections

Beginning in January 2026, the Reading and Listening sections will adopt a multistage adaptive testing format, in which the difficulty level is adjusted progressively based on the test taker’s performance.

In addition, test content will reflect the types of English used in real college settings, including classroom discussions and project-based assignments, while also aiming to reduce cultural bias in the topics and materials presented.

Addition of an International 1–6 Score Scale Alongside the Existing 0–120 Scale

Beginning January 21, 2026, TOEFL score reports will include the new 1–6 score scale in addition to the existing 0–120 score scale.

The new 1–6 score scale is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is designed to help universities and institutions interpret TOEFL scores more consistently across different language proficiency frameworks.

Both scoring systems will appear together on score reports for approximately two years.

  • Full headset replacement (starting in the second half of 2025)

  • Expanded preparation resources (available from July 2025)

  • Faster score reporting (starting in 2026)

  • Simplified test registration procedures
